Rotisserie

by Marguerite Vance

Under the heat lamp, in the plastic dome, the birds go around like a slow parade of small gold thoughts I keep having about my mother. Four ninety-nine. It has been four ninety-nine since before the divorce, before the move, before the year I did not answer the phone. Some things hold. I take the one nearest the glass because it has been turning the longest and I know something about that.
